Jasinski bill provides grant to promote local food growers

A bill introduced by Sen. John Jasinski (R-Faribault) to promote local foods has received its first committee hearing in the Senate. Senate File 455 would provide a $25,000 grant in each of the next two years to the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation to promote public awareness of local foods, and to connect local food producers and processors with potential buyers. It was heard in the Agriculture Finance Committee Monday, where it was laid over for consideration in the Agriculture Finance Bill later in session.

“This is a simple grant that goes a long way to help the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation put on their annual event to strengthen our local food producers,” said Sen. Jasinski today. “The committee was receptive to our goal, and I’m hopeful it will be included in the final Agriculture Finance bill later this year.”

Senator John Jasinski is in his first term. He represents District 24, which includes Steele County and parts of Dodge, Rice, and Waseca Counties.
